My first contact with Grey Owl came with the move of the same name. Being an ecology teacher in PA, I will now include his thoghts and ideas in my course of studies. He was a man far in advance of his time.

message

I got to find out about grey owl, via Richard Attenboughs film, what a facinating story, despite the charade, truly a man ahead of his time, his message may yet be heard again now, it's sad that becase he was acting the part of grey owl his message was lost for so many years

message

Thanks for giving me this interesting information.

Grey Owl's tomahwk (verified authentic) and many other artifacts belonging to Grey Owl are available for immediate purchase as a complete lot. Anyone interested?

Just read through your site, good work. A am a direct decendent of the Espaniels of Biscotasing. My Great Grandfather Alex taught Grey Owl much of what he knew of native ways. Grey Owl considered Alex his adopted father. It was nice to see such a well done movie on the subject.

What is the real indian name for Grey Owl?

message

Would like to share any thoughts and feelings about First Nation People. Greyowl became an Indian. First Nation people of his time understood this concept, but, non natives did not.

message

My father Guy Couvrette was born and raised in Bisco. He has shared many stories about growing up in that area, as well as his mothers stories about Grey Owl

message

As a ex-brit living in Canada for 30 years, also having visited Hastings. I think Grey Owl should live on for ever, he did wonderful things for the conservation of wildlife in Canada. In my opinion I think we should forget he was from the UK and just remember him as a native Indian. Godbless you 'Grey Owl' You make me proud to be Canadian.

Thanks for the background information! Great!

Both Archie and his Father George, had our family name, Furmage as one of their names. I would be very pleased to hear of what the connection with the family was?

Archie has been such a positive influence on my life...he will forever. He came to me--through his writings--at a time in my life when I could have been swept away; he helped me to find myself within creation. I have never been lost since. Just a Thank-you for the little exta perks you've given me with photos, etc. Do you have a chat site where other Grey Owl admirers can meet and share info and the light of kindred spirits? Best wishes, Nadine

I produced the BBC Timewatch documentary on Grey Owl with the help of Colin Taylor in Hastings and Donald Smith in Calgary.

When we were making it, I vaguely recall that in the National Archives of Canada, among Grey Owl's archive, there was a bequest that one particular document not be opened until the year 2000. (There was another, I seem to recall, that specified 2050.)

I wonder if this document has now been opened and if it revealed anything of interest? If anyone out there does let me know, please e-mail me. It might provide a great excuse to air the Timewatch again.

No person or author has fasinated me more than Grey Owl. I came quite by accident upon his autobiography in a bookstore in Toronto. I knew nothing of the man- the book just looked interesting. This took place before the movie. Presently I am reading 'Devil in Deerskins'written by Anahareo. The book is out of print and it took me three years to located. Someone in a wonderful book store in the western section of Montreal by the old Forum where Canadiens use to play hockey loaned me her copy. This man is a hero and inspiration to me. His writings have taken me into another world. When I read I feel like I am in the bush. This is someone who should not be forgotten. The movie unfortunately was far short in revealing the complexity of this man. The movie was a bit smaltzie, too romantic to be like the real Grey Owl. It was made to sell tickets and not reveal the what his life was really like. I wear a Grey Owl hat and have a sweatshirt with his likeness on it. Like Grey Owl I like to stretch the truth and say I am related to 'Buho Gris'. Somewhere in what is left of my life I want to travel in northern Quebec and Ontratio and visit his cabin in Sask. There is not a day I do not think of him and Anahareo. I have looked for women that are inspiration to me like she was to Grey Owl. Anyone who reads his books will be blessed. May he make us all conservationalists. Amen.

What a brilliant site. My friend Anna (A Norwegian who now lives in Eastbourne) and myself (living in Brighton) did our own Grey Owl tour in Hastings today based on your excellent information. We were dissapointed we could not go inside either of the churches though. Could we have the address of the Grey Owl group based in Hastings. We hope to do another tour in the spring and invite some friends, any tips. Best wishes Robert Mitchell.

What a fantastic sight. Had never heard of Gray Owl until we saw the movie on the Hallmark channel a week ago and are now "obsessed" with the man and are reading everything we can find out about him. Thank you so much for this sight.

We just watched a movie on T.V. about Archie Grey Owl, finding it interesting. I'd never heard of him before. So, I looked him up on the internet and have been reading some interesting "stuff" about him, including your site. Thanks!

He was not a fake one, nor a sham, he was a man who followed a inner true dream. He became what he dreamed. Ho!

Hello, I wondered if you have had any input on this topic from the Ojibways of Canada? Are they upset at what he did, do they accept him as one of their own or are they aware of the impact he had on environmental issues? Interesting page for an ex-pat Brit who first heard of Grey Owl in Canada. Great job, thanks, Margaret

Are there any books in circulation that are from the original writings of Grey Owl.

message

Reading many of the comments about Grey Owl, I was heartened that many look upon him as a gentle soul. he may have been a bit of a scalliwag but his motives were true. The documentaries that I have seen seem to point out that they knew all along that he was a fraud. If that was the case, why did they permit it to continue? Unless it was to their benefit to allow the charade to continue.

message

Does anyone know if there is a Grey Owl museum or exhibit someplace? Preferably online. Thanks!

I really want to thank the kind people who run this site for allowing my link on their page. Thank everyone for the visits to my Grey Owl photo Collection (Link on this sites main page). I now have 86 different photos re: Grey Owl, His family, The movie, His home town (s), etc. Your comments are wecome and appreciated. Again, thank you, Miigwetch.

I would like to know why people became disillusiond with him?

Purchased the video and watched it. Previously had not heard of Archie Grey Owl. I am very impressed by his efforts. I work with Boy Scouts and am interested in conservation. I also am involved in geneological research of my Native American heritage. Feel a kindred spirit.

Naturally I just watch the film about Grey Owl and now I'm looking for news. I'm very happy to find a lot about him. I think he was a great man.

message

Thank you for the article about Grey Owl.

message

i have been fascinated with Grey Owl, ever since i bought one of his books in canada - on my next trip i bought all i could find - i was lucky to have been in montreal when the film opened - there is much more on the net recently or at least since the film -

message

I found that this man and the way that he was portrayed in the film showed much inner struggle. I hope the film did an adequate job in decribing who this great man was.

message

My wife and I saw the film today and enjoyed it very much. We cannot understand the critics adverse comments on the film which appears to have prevented it being shown in the major cinema chains. We had to go to an independent cinema - The Regal in Henley - where it was on show for one day only.

message

My journey has been a strange one and Grey Owls spirit has visited me on many occassions so I am carrying on my talks on the environment and the little people and have become very close with my beaver friends.I would like to come there and visit to once again speak on the same thing Grey owl loved. My friends the beavers were the stars from the movie with Pierce Brosnan and I am Mohawk from Canada I will hope this message gets to you. I saw the film on saturday and was very moved, then I searched the web for more informayion as I had never hear of this man,and was disgusted to read that the film never got a distributor in america as they didn't know how to market it.And some of the insulting reviews just reinforce my digrace for the so called human being.Thank you

message

Just wanted to say thanks for placing this material about Archie on the web. I saw the film (Pierce Brosnan) last night and was moved by what the real Archie tried to do. I am a great admirer of Pierce Brosnan but I suspect that the real Grey Owl was very much more interesting and complicated than a 2 hour movie could capture. Thanks again.

i just got done watching the movie and enjoyed it thank you for giveing us a remarkable human being

Hello Everyone, Jack Humphrey here. This web site was kind enough to post a link to my web site containing photos and text of Grey Owl in Canada. I now have a small movie type clip that you can view at that same site. Just look in the upper left of the first page and you'll see "Watch Movies". You'll see "Grey Owl - the man" listed there. Hope you enjoy, I think it's thought provoking. Jack

I have just returned from relatives in Canada who had just seen the David Attenborough film of Grey Owl (starring Pierce Brosnan). Being an Old Hastonian / old boy of Hastings Grammar School, now living in Bristol, I aready knew of Grey Owl. I decided to search the internet for any Grey Owl resources and have followed links to this site. I have really enjoyed the visit and the old photos have bought back many memories. Keep up the excellent work I intend to visit more in the future.

message

A good friend and I just watched the Attenborough movie "Grey Owl" and, although realizing the film is a much romanticized version of this complicated man's life, nevertheless enjoyed it very much. The movie, in fact, has caused us to look up more information about this man. Thanks for your website with its photos.

message

I visited this site as one who follows in grey owls footsteps, I believe I met the son of the chap who wrote this site at Laughton show and he told me to look it up, I also have two of Grey Owls books, cheers, Walks Slow of the Blackfeet Lodge.

Date for movie premiere in Hastings, U.K. has been changed again. It is now set for Oct. 22nd. I understand this was necessary to guarantee Lord Attenborough's attendance.

I have known about Grey Owl since I was a child growing up in the North Bay area, and have recently co-produced a documentary (yes, another one) on the life of this fascinating man. Luminaries in the film include such knowledgeable people as Don Smith, Albert Lalonde, Agnes Lalonde, Phil Chester, Jane Billinghurst, Britt Jessup, Jane Espaniel, (thanks to Rich Gralewski) Eric Gaskell, and even Richard Attenborough and Pierce Brosnan.

I just wanted people on this web site to be aware of this new documentary - entitled 'The Spirit of Grey Owl' - in case it comes on television in your area. Spain and Portugal were the first countries to buy it! As of yet, we are still waiting for a Canadian broadcaster.

I would like to donate a copy to the Grey Owl Society as soon as I find out the address.

Thanks for this great webpage. Thanks also to Rich Gralewski for referring me to it and Jack Humphrey's photo album with all it's great images of Grey Owl, friends and family. Grey Owl's and Anahareo's message for our "little talking brothers" and the natural world around us all will continue to be heard as a result of the efforts of all of you. I first contacted Rich after reading his reviews of Grey Owl's books on Amazon.com to thank him for reinforcing my desire to read all his works. Rich is a wealth of information on both Grey Owl, Anahareo and the Macs (little talking brothers). He provided me with a source for all Grey Owl's books and was even so generous as to loan me a copy of Anahareo's book "Devil in Deerskins", which is out-of-print, all for his love of the Macs and Grey Owl's message. Thanks again to all of you for you generosity and commitment to our natural world.

Truth spans time, from the past, through the present, and into the future. The Grey Owl vision is the truth, albeit still distorted by governments and corporations whose projects and profits have to be priorized at the cost of Archie's dream, which is why the indian people need to make many more Dream Catchers. Born in Ashford, Kent and in Hastings, Sussex, we too have followed in the footprints left by Archie's mocassins and we too enjoy his wilderness in Canada, where we have lived since 1980.

Enjoyed the movie very much. Had never heard the story before but am very impressed.

We just watched the Gray Owl video of his life on television here in Australia. My friend, Rob was very impressed as he too grew up in England, (Gloucestershire) and lived his childhood as a native American Indian. Even now his home looks like a tepee, and he collects Native Americal memorabilia and history books. So he really identified with Grey Owl and hugely enjoyed the programme. I have just printed out your web page for him. Best wishes, Eunice

Watched a BBC documentary on Grey Owl that was very interesting. Sadly it dwelt on more of his personal life than his naturalistic works. Also, I have a copy of a small treatise published by Geoff Hutchinson: "The Hastings Indian Grey Owl" which also provides another view. I did have his address in UK but cannot put my hands on it at present.

I would be honored to become a member of the Grey Owl Society. How can I do this? As a young student back in the late 50's I recall seeing the National Parks film featuring Grey Owl, his beavers and his message. I have become interested in his great vision and total dedication to a balance with nature as exhibited by native peoples in earlier times. I am planning a summer trip to Prince Albert and Riding Mountain National Parks with my grand children to bring them into contact with this truly great and inspirational individual. Please advise how I can join the Grey Owl Society.

I too recently learned about the Grey Owl, and I am very inspired by him and his ways for loving nature.

I admire him most for becoming the person he dreamed himself to be. Not many of us can do this because we are too influenced by what we believe others believe we should be.

Grey Owl lived his dream and shares his dream with those who listen with a vision.

Hello everyone, I've greatly expanded the Grey Owl photo album on my web site and I now have 60 photographs in it including quite a few new finds, some beautiful movie set photos, and some history. To make it easier for those who might like to view the photos I'm providing a direct link to that album _ //albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=33753&a=209309 _. Perhaps the web master here would be kind enough to replace the link that he/she has so kindly provided already on their main web page (Jack Humphrey's Photo collection - see album #12 Grey Owl related). That link was a little cumbersome as it took quite a few steps to get to the _#12 Grey Owl Related_ album. I hope this is of some help to those interested. Regards, Jack Humphrey
