Bookmarks, Fairtrade, Co-op Retail and trades union stalls. Tressell exhibition, films and sound archive in upstairs studio.



10.30am. Official opening by Michael Foster MP, Peter Skinner, MEP and Jeremy Birch, Leader of the Labour Group, Hastings Borough Council

10.45am. Local Historian Brion Purdey ‘Hastings in the time of Robert Tressell'.


11.45am.
Bernard McKinley ‘Robert Tressell and the story of the manuscript of ‘The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists'.


2pm Andy Lynch and Ricky Tomlinson talk about the multi-media treatment of The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists

Clive Griggs, University of Brighton, ‘The response of contemporary newspapers and magazines to the publication of the Ragged Trousered Philanthropists in 1914'.

6.30pm Light suppers, alcoholic and soft drinks available, followed at 7.00pm by the Robert Tressell Socialist Quiz, question master Cllr Jeremy Birch. This quiz was extremely popular in 2006 and just as popular this year. The bar was open throughout.

Sunday 1st July 2007

Doors open 10.00am. Refreshments, stalls and exhibition open.

Entrance to the Robert Tressell is free this year, but donations for our work and upkeep of the website will be very gratefully received over the weekend.

Mike Smith-Rawnsley ‘Looking Forward: Tressell and the Utopian Tradition.' Mike traces the influence of authors including Edward Bellamy, William Morris and Robert Blatchford and others, on Robert Tressell, and demonstrates Tressell's truly innovative ideas on the arguments for socialism.


12.00 Discussion on ideas for Tressell commemoration as part of Liverpool City of Culture, 2008, with Ricky Tomlinson, John Nettleton and Andy Lynch. Neil Bates MC..

14.00 The famous Tressell walk round the sites of Mugsborough described in The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, with Trevor Hopper. This started at Concordia Hall and met up with other walkers outside Debenhams department store at around 2.15pm (Robertson Street entrance). As always the rain held off!
