Ragged Trousered Philanthropist translator Else Tonke visits Hastings

Else Tonke who has recently translated and published the first full-length German version of the Ragged Trousered Philanthropists visited Hastings with fellow researcher Klaus Wondratschek. The visitors from Berlin were met by members of the Robert Tressell Centre and were shown the Tressell Collection in Hastings Museum. Else and Klaus were delighted to visit the places around Hastings where Tressell lived and worked almost a hundred years ago. Their visit was timed to coincide with the Old Town Carnival which they also thoroughly enjoyed. The pictures show Else signing a copy of her German Translation of the Ragged Trousered Philanthropists in Hastings Museum in front of Klaus and one of the few remaining examples of Tressell's work as a signwriter. Many of the pictures used in the German Translation were supplied by local photographer Ion Castro.
