Hastings

The 2003 festival was a one-day event on Sunday 25th May because the main event will be in Dublin this year. The day starting with a talk by Brion Purdey at Hastings Museum followed by a walk led by Trevor Hopper from Hastings Town Centre  past places where Tressell lived and worked and places he describes in the book to the Castle with magnificent views of the town where Steve Peak described the town in Tressell's day and showed where it all happened.

The Dublin Event

On 18th April 2002 Robert Tressell was honoured by his home city of Dublin when his portrait and a plaque were unveiled in the Dublin Writers Museum in Parnell Square.
As a follow-up to his homecoming a two day festival has been arranged to celebrate and appreciate his work. This will be held on Thursday 18th and Friday 19th September 2003 at The Larkin Centre, Liberty Hall, Dublin.
At 6pm on 18th September, Des Geraghty, President of SIPTU, will perform the opening ceremony. A lecture by Stan Newens will be followed by a social evening of Irish music and song.
On Friday morning a bus tour will include The Writers Museum, The Tressell Birthplace Plaque in Wexford Street and a tour of the Guinness Brewery. The evening lectures will be by Charles Callan and Francis Devine, of The Irish Labour History Society, and John Nettleton, of The Liverpool Trades Council.
Nearly a century after its completion Tressell's work is revered by Socialists around the world. Robert Tressell has come home! Please join us in celebrating his remarkable book.
